Student mobile phone use will be banned across 80 Western Sydney Catholic schools from the beginning of the 2026 school year. The restriction presents a positive opportunity to enhance student outcomes, both in academic excellence and wellbeing.
Catholic Schools Parramatta Diocese Chief Executive Officer Jack de Groot feels that consistent restrictions with clear parameters are necessary to support both students and staff.
“Though the majority of our schools already have a phones-off-and-away approach, it’s important to make clear that this is the right approach for all our students,” Jack said. “Of course, there is a place for mobile phones in our lives, but that’s not at school.”
Parent representative George Giovas agrees that school is not the place for mobile phones.
”It is important to have a consistent, proactive and collaborative approach to the issue of mobile phones,” George said.
The safety and wellbeing of all our children and teachers during school is paramount. This is something that needs to be understood, respected and adhered to.
With the social media ban for children and young people under 16 coming into effect in December, the move to restrict phone use feels particularly timely. It also provides an opportunity to encourage students to prioritise real-world interactions and build social skills accordingly. School staff will receive support in implementing this policy throughout the school day, including guidance on appropriate consequences for breaches.
Of course, a small number of carefully considered exceptions to these rules will be allowed. For example, some students with diabetes use mobile phone apps to monitor their blood sugar levels and require access to a phone for safety reasons. Digital literacy will continue to be valued, but the ban certainly supports boundary-setting and perspective.

CHARACTER STRENGTHS We need to understand the importance of character strengths because these foundational qualities shape our children's development far beyond academic achievements. During these formative years, children are building the core traits that will influence their relationships, decision-making, and resilience throughout their lives. Understanding character strengths helps parents recognise and nurture their children's natural abilities while supporting growth in areas that might need development. For instance, when parents understand how kindness or perseverance contributes to their child's wellbeing, they can create opportunities to practice these strengths through daily activities and conversations. These character strengths serve as protective factors against challenges children may face. A child who has developed gratitude might cope better with disappointment, while one who has cultivated bravery might handle peer pressure more effectively. Parents who understand this can actively support their children through difficulties by helping them draw upon their character strengths. We are looking forward to seeing all the different character strengths we are growing at St Joseph's tomorrow.

During Term 4 we have been focusing on the Catholic Social Teaching of ‘Preferential Option for the Poor’. As part of living out this Teaching we are supporting our Local Parish Mary Immaculate and the Stanhope Gardens/Quakers Hill St Vincent De Paul Conference with creating Christmas Food Hampers. These Christmas Food Hampers will be distributed to families in need in our local community this Christmas Time. We will be collecting different items over the next three weeks. Year 1 African Drumming Incursion! What an incredible day our Year 1 students had exploring the vibrant world of African drumming! The children had so much fun learning rhythms, playing together, and experiencing the joy of making music as a group. Drumming is a wonderful way for young learners to develop coordination, listening skills, and teamwork while expressing themselves creatively. The smiles and laughter said it all – our students absolutely loved it! A huge thank you to our visiting drummer Lucky for bringing such energy and enthusiasm to our school!
